1. To be skeptical of hotel brochures and web sites
- Check room size
- Google
- Close to beach? (On top of Cliff)
- Within walking distance? (May be up to 5 miles)
2. Don't pack what you can buy. Buy small travel sized toiletries at the site.
3. Book a vacation rental for a family trip for more room, such as a timeshare, house or condo.
4. Remember to take extra critical items in your carryon bag
- Medicines
- 2 days change of clothes
- Remember the 3-1-1 Rule - 3 oz. of any item, in a 1 quart zip bag and 1 per passenger
5. Prepare for travel crisis
- Copy your ID - Passport , Drivers License and Insurance Cards
- eMail a copy of your ID to yourself
- Put an extra copy of your ID in your luggage
- Let credit card companies know you are traveling with a planned itinerary as they may reject purchases if sudden change is noted.
6. Fine dining for less. Eat heavy at lunch and light for dinner. Lunches are usually less expensive as well
7. Tag your luggage - Place inside, outside and in side pockets. More than one is recommended. Name and phone number only.
8. Buy travel insurance when going out of the country, traveling a long distance or planning on adventures you normally don't do.
9. Travel in the off season. Cheaper fares and not as crowded. (Disneyland for example)
10. Sanitize your room:
- Get rid of the bedspread
- Get travel packs of sanitizing wipes to clean, or ziplock bags to cover, remote controls, phone or anything you might touch.
11. Either KNOW or get translated into the local language or noted on index cards:
- Hello
- Goodbye
- Please
- Thank you
- Where is the bathroom
- My name is ______________
- I am staying at the ______________
12. Mail your luggage via UPS or FedEx. Include port-a-crib or stroller.
13. Check your personal auto insurance before paying for coverage of a rental.
14. Invest in or rent a GPS and know how to use it. Better than a map.
15. Remember "Rule 240" which dictates that if you are bumped off a flight the airline must put you on the next available flight, even if on another airlines or in 1st Class. Also check your ticket regulations as new rules are being added and old rules changed.
